What is carbon tetrachloride?

Carbon tetrachloride is an organic compound which is also known as tetrachloromethane (IUPAC name). Its chemical formula is CCl4. All four chlorine atoms are covalently bonded to the central carbon atom.

Preparation of Carbon tetrachloride

Carbon tetrachloride is prepared by reacting methane with chlorine gas.

CH4 + 4 Cl2 → CCl4 + 4 HCl
