How can you Prepare Chloroform from Ethanol?
We can prepare Chloroform in laboratory simply distilling Bleaching powder, Ethanol and water.
this reaction occurs in 4 steps:
- First bleaching powder and water reacts to produce chlorine and Ca(OH)2.
- Produced chlorine then to react with ethanol, initially forming acetaldehyde.
- Acetaldehyde then reacts with chlorine to produce trichloroethanal or chloral.
- Finally, heating chloral with slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) to obtain trichloromethane (chloroform) and calcium formate salt.
