How can you Prepare Chloroform from Ethanol?

We can prepare Chloroform in laboratory simply distilling Bleaching powder, Ethanol and water.

this reaction occurs in 4 steps:

  1. First bleaching powder and water reacts to produce chlorine and Ca(OH)2.
  2. Produced chlorine then to react with ethanol, initially forming acetaldehyde.
  3. Acetaldehyde then reacts with chlorine to produce trichloroethanal or chloral.
  4. Finally, heating chloral with slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) to obtain trichloromethane (chloroform) and calcium formate salt.
